Total Learning and Assessment Procedures: The programme will include a mix of self-assessment, peer-assessment and trainer assessment procedures, including: a number of self-assessment questionnaires to encourage the learners to assess and reflect on their individual competency in the skills discussed throughout the programme; learners are expected to role-play the skills covered in the programme and given feedback by the trainer and peers; trainer assessment of the learners’ reflective journaling after each session capturing the main points learned during each session, making a commitment to follow up on at least one practical action point and reviewing progress on the commitment made; self-assessment through multiple choice quizzes after each session to assess the transfer of knowledge and main concepts covered during each session.
Grading System: Standard pass/fail grading scale
Pass Mark: 50%

Structure of Programme:


This programme will be delivered in one module covering the following topics:

1. Identifying Learning Needs

  • Discuss what training is and how it develops knowledge, skills, and attitudes to bring about competency.
  • Outline the steps to develop a training plan: determining needs, identifying who needs training, choosing learning strategies, understanding trainees, and creating a detailed plan.
  • Explain how to determine training needs by identifying performance gaps, the need for effective use of new technology, competitive edge, staff retention, regulatory compliance, and improvements in productivity and profitability.
  • List resources useful in determining who needs training, such as company policy, employee records, performance data, customer feedback, HR complaints, observations, discussions, focus groups, interviews, questionnaires, and skill tests.

2. How People Learn

  • Address the four key elements of effective adult learning: motivation, retention, transference, and reinforcement.
  • Discuss how to motivate adult learners by setting a friendly tone, showing individual care, and setting an appropriate difficulty level. Mention other motivators such as personal achievement, social well-being, external expectations, social relationships, stimulation, and interest in learning.
  • Explain how to achieve great retention rates by having trainees go from passive to active involvement.
  • Define positive and negative transference.
  • Discuss using positive and negative reinforcement.
  • Cover the sensory preferences of trainees (visual, auditory/oral, kinesthetic/tactile) and how to cater to each.
  • Describe Kolb’s Learning Cycle of concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation.

3. The Qualities of an Effective Trainer

  • Qualities of great trainers including communication, knowledge, experience, interpersonal skills, interest in learning, patience, open-mindedness, creativity, preparedness, and flexibility.
  • Discuss typical resistance to training, such as time constraints, relevance, quality, results, cost, retention, and inertia.

4. Planning Your Training Session​

  • Setting goals to meet training needs using quantifiable measurements.
  • Setting up a training schedule that considers logical progression and avoids information overload.
  • Choosing appropriate training methods, considering training goals, the audience, budget, time allocation, and available resources.
  • Cover different training methods including:
    • Classroom/Instructor-Led Training: advantages and disadvantages.
    • Interactive Methods: quizzes, small group discussions, case studies, active summaries, Q&A sessions, role-playing (advantages and disadvantages).
    • Experiential/Hands-On Training: cross-training, demonstrations.
    • Online or E-Learning: web-based training, audio/video-conferencing, webinars, distance learning.
    • Blended Learning Approach.

5. Presentation Skills for Trainers

  • Tips to manage presentation jitters: preparation, being real, vulnerability, presence, and generosity.
  • Explain the two essential elements of communication: purpose and recipient.
  • Tips to keep the audience attentive.

6. Giving Feedback to Trainees

  • Discuss using questions in training to get feedback, find out what learners know, create interest, help recall, monitor progress, and build confidence.
  • Explain characteristics of excellent questions: clarity, relevance to objectives, inclusivity, and being open but guided.
  • Questioning techniques: general, pass on, question/wait/select, send back, and send out.
  • Handling trainees’ answers with positive reinforcement and acknowledgment.

7. Visual Aids

  • Tips for using PowerPoint effectively as a training tool
  • Other visual aids

8. The ABC Structure

  • Structuring a training session using the ABC Model (Attention Phase, Breakdown Phase, Check Phase).
  • Helping the audience follow using a logical structure and compact segments.

9. Role-play practice sessions.

  • Participants would have prepared a 15-minute training session on a topic of their choice and will be able to practice delivering the training, incorporating the techniques and knowledge gained over the previous two days.
  • Participants will focus on:
    • Applying different questioning techniques and handling responses.
    • Structuring presentations effectively.
    • Using visual aids.
    • Provide constructive feedback on each participant’s performance, focusing on areas for improvement and strengths.

10. Evaluating Training

  • Using the Kirkpatrick Model to evaluate training
