Anger has long since been a characteristic of our culture and has become an expected response to stressful or threatening situations. This can lead to serious problems in the workplace as employees with anger can destroy team spirit and morale, generate anxiety among co-workers, engage in sabotage and other undesirable behaviours, or become so enraged that they spark aggressive emotional outbursts. This programme will help participants understand, manage and prevent workplace hostility. Important issues covered are; reading early warning signs, responding appropriately, calming angry employees, avoiding repercussions, and creating organisational climates that encourage a harmonious environment for employees.

Part 1: Understanding Anger and Challenging Behaviours  

  • Explore psychological and cultural roots of anger;  
  • Different types of challenging behaviours; 
  • The impact of anger on individuals and teams; 
  • Group discussion with real-life examples. 

Part 2: Triggers and Early Warning Signs  

  • Identify common triggers and subtle behavioural cues indicating rising anger.  

Part 3: Self-Awareness and Emotional Regulation  

  • Recognising your own emotional triggers and responses;  
  • Techniques to self-manage stress and anger.  

Part 4 Effective Communication and De-escalation Techniques  

  • Verbal and non-verbal communication skills to calm angry individuals; active listening, empathy, and assertiveness.  
  • Role-plays in pairs or small groups with feedback. 

Part 5: Responding to Challenging Situations  

  • Step-by-step approach to handling aggressive or disruptive behaviours safely and professionally.  
  • Case study group work with solution presentations. 

Part 6: Building a Positive Organisational Climate  

  • Strategies for creating an environment that reduces stress and hostility: policies, leadership style, team norms.  
  • Group brainstorming and action planning. 

Part 7: Preventing Recurrence and Follow-up Actions  

  • How to document incidents, support affected employees, and implement ongoing measures.
