Workplace counselling – how to support your staff
Research shows that workplace counselling is a valuable resource and an effective way of developing a company culture that cares. Personal and/or work-related problems can adversely affect an employee’s work satisfaction and job performance.
In a business context, workplace counselling aims to support staff members through challenging periods and help them feel more in control.
Something for everyone
Face-to-face counselling sessions with a qualified coach can help members of a team with a number of difficulties. These can range from depression, anxiety, grief and bereavement, through to stress-related issues, substance abuse, and forms of discrimination.
Another effective method is ‘Computerized Cognitive Behavioural Therapy’. There are a number of CCBT courses available such as OC Fighter (for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), Beating the Blues (for Depression & Anxiety), and Fear Fighter (for Panic & Phobia Disorders). A programme involves an employee having access to one-to-one psychological support whilst working through online sessions. Initially, a face-to-face evaluation is carried out. Once the employee is verified as being suitable for a programme, they receive a username and password. The member can then log in and complete the course at their own pace. Added one-to-one support sessions are always available when required.
Cost-effective and confidential
Workplace counselling is an extremely cost-effective method of staff retention. John McLeod points out that ‘workplace counselling is generally effective in alleviating psychological problems and has a significant impact on sickness absence.’ The benefit of workplace counselling has been extensively researched and is highly recommended by the National Institute of Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE), UK. Employees can rest assured that sessions are strictly confidential. Moreover, after the completion of a programme, the HR Manager can continue to provide support with one-to-one meetings.
