Dodge that burnout: Avoiding work-related stress
At some point in our careers, many of us will experience some form of burnout or work-related stress – but how do we know when we’re burnt out and what can we do about it?
Burnout is more than just a little down period that a meditation app, a spot of yoga, or a week on the beach will fix. Its three key symptoms include; feelings of cynicism and detachment, overwhelming exhaustion and a sense of lack of accomplishment with regards to work. It’s not just a moment of frustration, but a continued response to chronic stress that could result in further health complications if ignored including depression, hypertension and more.
Sure, you love your job, otherwise, you wouldn’t be putting so much effort into it, but as with everything else balance is key. Learn how to successfully tackle, or avoid this phenomenon with handy tips.
1. Take a holiday that’s off the grid
Going on holiday with friends or family is always majorly therapeutic. Make sure you turn on your out-of-office message and make it a point to steer clear from your inbox. Another plus with regards to going on holiday is that you’ll also set a great example for other hard workers in your organisation.
2. Know your limits
One of the things you’re most likely to hear entrepreneurs say is that it’s really hard to unplug. That would also imply that burnout is inevitable, however, it’s important to be aware of the warning signs.
If you feel you might be edging on a burnout sometimes simple things like taking a couple of days off or planning a night out with friends will really help to take off the edge.
3. Make time for free time
Meetings are important, as is free time, and it’s important to treat them equally. Make it a point to schedule free time into your calendar just as you would any other business obligation. Even if it’s just 30 minutes a day, just mark that time off and make it yours.
You’ll get back to work feeling inspired and fresh, and there’s a good chance that you’ll be more productive than had you attempted working straight through the rest of your day.
4. Catch up on Zs
Naps aren’t just for kids, they’re for full-grown adults too. Instead of going for that fifth cup of coffee, consider powering down for as little as 20 minutes which should leave you feeling fresh and recharged.
5. Find a hobby
Sometimes you just need a good excuse to get away from it all, and finding a hobby you can enjoy for a couple of hours a week might just be the answer. Creative hobbies such as arts, crafts and sometimes even sports, can provide a therapeutic release to built-up stressed, and get back to work the following day feeling ready to go!
